Ingredients
First group of ingredients
- 1 cup sugar
- 1-1/4 cups water
- 2/3 cup crisco
- 2/3 cups dates
- 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
- 2 teaspoons cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon cloves
DISSOLVE IN A CUP
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 2 teaspoon water
Last group of ingredients
- 2 cups flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
Instructions
- Boil together for 3 minutes: sugar, 1-1/4 cup water, Crisco, dates, nutmeg, cinnamon, and cloves. Cool.
- Then add the dissolved baking soda, salt and the 2 tsp. water.
- Mix well; lastly add the 2 cups of flour and 1 tsp. baking powder. Pour into a greased and floured 9-in square pan.
- Bake at 325 degrees 40 minutes or until done.
I submitted this recipe a few years ago and it is very moist! Also if you double the recipe you will get a very nice size 13×9 cake..I have used half orange juice and half water in the cake.. Also oil or coconut oil can be subst. for solid shortening…A 8 0z. bag of pitted dates works perfect for doubling this recipe., cut each date in 3 pieces works well too..For frosting I use xxxxx sugar, orange juice, and lots of orange zest…You could add a little fleischmann margarine to the frosting as well and some orange extract if you don’t have orange zest..
